Deadly Shebaab assault hits African Union troops
BELEDWYNE – Deadly ambush attack has targeted armored personnel carriers carrying Ethiopian forces under African Union mission in Somalia near Baladweyne town, some 335km north of Mogadishu.
The attack happened in Yarbala area, some 30km from the town, after Al Shabaab fighters attacked on Ethiopian troops, a witness, who asked to be anonymous, said.
He told Mareeg Online that heavy fighting lasted for hours had flared up in the area earlier on Sunday, following number of militants armed with RPGs and machine-guns had clashed with African Union soldiers.
“It was fierce fighting. I can’t confirm you the exact figure of casualty resulted from the skirmish”, he said
Somali-based group of Al Shabaab says its fighters carried out an orchestrated attack on African Union peacekeepers while travelling through near Baladweyne town.
The group claimed to have killed several Ethiopian soldiers during the battle in Yarbale neighborhood, saying its fighters also destroyed military vehicles.
There was no immediate response from African Union mission in Mogadishu over the claims made by Al Shabaab.
