Deadly clash kills 8 people in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Heavy fighting broke out between Somali government forces and al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab outside Garbaharey town in Gedo region.

The clash flared up when Somali government forces raided on Al Shabaab targets in Maykarebey and Iimay, 20km north of Garbaharey town, according to journalists Jeilani Hussein.

Hussein says heavily armed Al Shabaab militants launched counterattack mid-morning, sparking fierce fighting.

He says at least 8 people, including both warring sides had been killed in the latest fighting.

Somali armed group Al Shabaab claims to have killed three soldiers during the skirmish.

There was no immediate comment from the military forces over the claims.
