Deadly blasts kill 5 people in Somalia
MOGADISHU, Somalia –At least five people have been killed in roadside bomb attacks on a military convoy traveling through the Middle Shabelle region of southern Somalia.
The first explosion went off in Burane vicinity near Mahaday town where African Union forces have a military base, leaving five people, including a peacekeeper dead, according to a local radio broadcast Risaala based in Mogadishu.
The 2nd explosion targeted an armored vehicle carrying Somali military soldiers near Balcad town, some 30km away from the capital, Mogadishu.
Somali armed group Al Shabaab claimed to have killed and wounded several soldiers on board.
There was no immediate comment from the military command over the claims.
The group was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia.
The rebel group also lost most of their strongholds, but it still controls large rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia.
The al Qaeda linked group has been fighting for over ten years to overthrow the internationally-backed government in Somalia.
