Deadly attack hits US airbase, 100 killed – Al Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Islamic militant group al Shabaab has carried out an attack on US airbase in Belidogle, in the south of the capital, Mogadishu.

The attack started with a suicide car bomb explosion at the gates to a US drone base before gunmen swarmed inside the base.

It unclear how many were killed in the attack.

Somali armed group al Shabaab says its fighters killed over 100 soldiers during the assault.

But, Somali military says the coalition forces repulsed the attack.

The group was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia.

The rebel group also lost most of their strongholds, but it still controls large rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia.

The al Qaeda linked group has been fighting for over ten years to overthrow the internationally- backed government in Somalia.
