A separate incident, the group says 5 other soldiers were killed on board after a roadside bomb explosion targeted a military vehicle in the same area of Lower Shabelle region.
The attack comes a week after the group killed 23 soldiers in suicide and gun attack on a military base near Marka town.
Al Shabaab, an al Qaeda linked group, which group has been fighting for over ten years to overthrow the internationally- backed government in Somalia.
The group was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia.
The rebel group also lost most of their strongholds, but it still controls large rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia.
