BARDERE – Heavy fighting broke out between Kenyan army forces and Al Shabaab fighters near Barder town, some 400 km southwest of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.
The gun battle flared up in Fahfah-dhun area, about 8km from the town, when heavily armed Al Shabaab fighters attacked on army base manned by Kenyan forces, a witness, Mohamed Hussein said.
Hussein says heavy weaponries could be heard through the town, adding that Kenyan forces, serving under African Union mission in Somalia had been repulsing the attack.
“It was an ambush attack, but the group’s fighters armed with RPGs and machine guns launched a surprise attack on the Kenyan troops’ base”, he said.
Hussein added that number of people, including both combatants had been killed in the skirmish.
Neither Kenyan army officials nor Al Shabaab has commented on the clash near Barder town, some 400 km southwest of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.
