Deadly ambush hits AMISOM forces in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia, (Mareeg Online) — Heavily armed fighters belonging to Al Shabaab launched an ambush attack on African Union personnel carrier in southwest of Somalia.

The attack took place in Golweyn area, some 120 kilometers (74 miles) south of Somali capital Mogadishu, after roadside explosion followed by surprise attack, a witness said.

He says the African Union forces repulsed the ambush by Al Shabab, triggering fierce clash lasted for hours at Golweyn and Bulomarer corridor.

The explosion burned and destroyed an armored personnel carrier, according to reliable sources, who spoke to Mareeg Online on condition of anonymity.

Deaths and injuries were reportedly feared, sources said.

There was no immediate comment from African Union mission in Somalia over the attack.

Last year, At least 18 African Union – AMISOM soldiers from Ugandan contingent have lost their lives following a deadly ambush attack claimed by Al Shabaab.

Uganda, Kenya and Burundi, are among countries contributed soldiers to Somalia and have suffered heavy losses of soldiers in attacks by Al Shabaab.
