MOGADISHU, Somalia – A suspected US airstrike has killed at least 73 al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab fighters in Somalia.
The strike was carried out on Saturday after heavily armed Al Shabaab militants stormed into Somali military base in Bar-Sanguni area near Kismayo.
VOA journalist Harun Macruf quoting sources said the strike killed 73 militants and destroyed their battle-wagons in an area between Araare and Muse Haji near Kismayo some 500km south of the capital of Mogadishu.
It remains unclear who exactly carried out Saturday’s air raid in Somalia.
The bombing comes after al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab claimed to have killed at least 41 soldiers during an attack on Somali military base in Bar-sanguni.
In a statement aired by Radio Andulus, an Al Shabaab mouthpiece said, the group’s fighters had briefly seized the army base, after the soldiers retreated.
The group also claimed to have killed 57 Ethiopian soldiers serving under African Union force in Somalia, after bomb attack followed by an ambush carried out near Burhakaba town.
The al Qaeda inspired group has been fighting for more than ten years to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia
