BORAMA, Somaliland— At least 19 people died, and 214 were injured during clashes between protesters and security forces in Borama.
Newly appointed Awdal Governor Abdirashid Hassan Matan said most victims were male, while 22 remain hospitalized, some transferred for advanced treatment abroad.
Interior Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab said Borama and Awdal are usually peaceful, describing the violence as unexpected, unplanned, and unfortunate for local residents.
Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Cabdi urged residents to maintain peace, urging clans to avoid further conflicts across Boorama and western Somaliland regions.
The unrest followed the controversial Xeer Ciise ceremony in Saylac, escalating disputes between Ciise and Gadabuursi clans over land, ownership, and traditional celebrations.
