Bomb blast hits AU troops in Somalia
MOGADISHU, Somalia – A roadside bomb explosion has ripped through an African Union peacekeeping troops’ armored vehicle in central Somalia.
The explosion followed by an ambush attack targeted a military vehicle carrying Ethiopian troops serving under African Union mission (AMISOM) in Halgan area of Hiran region, a witness said.
Halgan, an area lies some 270km north of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
He says number of AU soldiers were killed or injured in the explosion.
Somali armed group al Shabaab says it has carried out a bomb attack on AU troops’ convoy in Halgan area, inflicting casualties on the soldiers.
There was no immediate comment from African Union mission over the claims.
Al Shabaab, an al Qaeda linked group, which wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
The group also carried out deadly attacks on AU, Somali army bases, with some of those attacks targeted hotels, popular eateries and other public gatherings in the capital of Mogadishu.
The rebel group has been waging insurgency for more than ten years in Somalia.
