MOGADISHU, Somalia — Al-Shabab group claims it shot down an African Union helicopter used by Burundian troops near Hawadley area in Middle Shabelle region.
The group made the claim on its official channels. No confirmation yet from AU mission or Burundian military officials in Somalia.
Shortly after, Al-Shabab also claimed to have seized Hawadley, 50km north of Mogadishu, following AU troop withdrawals from the area.
Burundian forces abandoned their positions after deliberate flooding, orchestrated by Al-Shabab to disrupt operations.
Water was diverted from the Bal’ad reserve—the largest in Somalia—over three days to inundate Burundian camps and surrounding terrain.
Hawadley’s bridge is a critical link used for logistics and movement between Middle Shabelle and southern Somalia.
Residents reported spotting Al-Shabab fighters entering the area on Monday, suggesting a swift and coordinated advance by the group into the village.
If confirmed, this would be a major tactical victory for Al-Shabab in their ongoing fight against Somali and international forces.
The al Qaeda-linked group stepped up its attacks in Middle Shabelle and Hiran region, capturing several towns, including Aden Yabal.
Driven out of Mogadishu in 2011, the group still carries out deadly attacks and holds large swaths in south and central Somalia.
