AMISOM’s Head of Mission has commended Somali Forces for preventing what would have been a large-scale attack on SYL hotel in Mogadishu, which left at least 22 people dead on Tuesday.
Francisco Madeira, AU Special Representative for Somalia said the truck loaded with explosives failed to reach its target after it was obstructed by the Somali security forces leading to a premature explosion.
“Today’s botched attack was as a result of the studious forces who risked their lives to mitigate another senseless assault,” Madeira said in a statement posted on AMISOM’s Twitter account.
Ambassador Madeira commiserated with families of victims of the attack and wishes those who sustained injuries a quick recovery.
Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack which was the second of its kind in Mogadishu in less than a week. Tuesday’s attack was huge and caused destruction in SYL hotel and nearby buildings.
