AMISOM commends enduring role of women in Somalia.
Mareeg.com– Mogadishu, Somalia**- The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) Ambassador Mahamat Saleh Annadif has applauded the relentless efforts of Somali women in shaping the country’s destiny during a meeting with female representatives of the Somali civil society. Ambassador Annadif praised the women’s relentless effort in widening the democratic space in Somalia. “The tireless dedication of Somali women saw the record nomination of more than 30 female members of Parliament,” noted Ambassador Annadif. “As proof of their investment in Somalia’s future, Somali female leaders continue to inspire a younger generation of educated, ambitious and resourceful women who will take the mantle from them,” he added. “We all know the history of Haawo Tako and Araweelo as well as dozens of dynamic women who have had left a positive imprint in Somalia’s history,” said Ambassador Annadif adding that in various roles, Somali women have displayed that they are a critical pillar in the development of Somalia. On their part, the civil society members thanked AMISOM for its continued support and called on the mission to take part in the facilitation of civic education ahead of the 2016 elections. “It is important that as we move along, we work closely with AMISOM to educate Somalis about the political process as we approach the 2016 elections,” said Amina Hajji Elmi, Director of the Save Somali Women and Children (SSWC) organization. As part of its mandate, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) continues to engage with government and civil society stakeholders as the process of rebuilding institutions and establishment of public services takes shape in Somalia.
