MOGADISHU, Somalia — At least six people were killed Saturday when Al-Shabab fighters stormed a high-security intelligence prison in Mogadishu.
The assault began with a suicide car bomb at Godka Jilacow, followed by gunmen disguised in uniforms breaching the heavily guarded National Intelligence compound.
Officials said eight militants opened fire inside the facility. Several detainees escaped, including suspected Al-Shabab members, though most were later recaptured by authorities.
Somali special forces responded to the attack, engaging militants in heavy gunfire. The government described the assault as using deception not previously seen before.
The raid came hours after Somalia reopened 52 city roads. Al-Shabab regularly targets government sites in its insurgency against Somalia’s internationally recognized federal government.
