Al-Shabab has publicly executed five men accused of spying in Jilib, a town in Somalia’s Middle Juba region controlled by the armed group.
The executions took place in a public square, where residents were gathered to witness the killings carried out by the armed group.
Al-Shabab said the men were accused of passing information to the United States and Somali intelligence agencies, allegedly aiding airstrikes.
The group claimed the men provided intelligence used in previous attacks targeting its officials and leadership in areas under its control.
The killings come amid increased military pressure on al-Shabab from Somali government forces and international partners supporting operations and airstrikes.
