Al Shabaab attacks on army base in southren Somalia

KISMAYO, Somalia– Heavily armed militants beloging to Al Shabaab have carried out an attack on army base outside Kismayo, a port town lies some 500km south of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The assault was discribed as one of the biggest raids in months that targeted a military base run by Jubaland state forces, local residents said.

They say heavy weaponry could be heard.

It is unclear how many werw killed in the latest attack.

Somali armed group Al-Shabaab frequently attacks allied forces’ bases in the Jubba regions of southern Somalia as part of its attempt to oust the UN-backed government based in Mogadishu.
