More than 4,000 people crossed into Uganda from the Democratic Republic of Congo last year, bringing the total number of Congolese refugees displaced in 2017 to 57,000, according to the UNHCR. The UN agency chief began his Africa tour with president John Magufuli of Tanzania and also met the Foreign Minister Augustine Mahiga. "President John Magufuli’s affirmation that Tanzania remains hospitable to refugees was very encouraging.," said Mr. Grandi, the refugee chief. "We agreed to work together in a spirit of mutual trust on asylum procedures, voluntary repatriation, support to host communities, more international cooperation." Dr. Grandi is in Ethiopia's capital to attend the 32nd African Union summit in Addis Ababa, titled "Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa."
