57 UN-backed soldiers killed in Somalia attack – Al Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The al Qaeda inspired group, Al Shabaab has claimed to have carried out bomb and gun attack on UN-backed African Union peacekeepers’ armored personal carrier in Somalia.

The group says it killed 57 soldiers from Ethiopian contingent in roadside bomb explosion followed by an ambush attack near Burhakaba town about 164km away from Mogadishu.

It says its fighters had also burned down 7 armored vehicles during Friday’s attack.

There was no immediate comment from African Union mission in Somalia over the claims.

The group has been fighting to topple the weak-western backed government based in Mogadishu for more than ten years in Somalia.

The al Qaeda linked group in Somalia has also claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack on Dusit hotel complex in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, leaving dozens dead.

The group calls Nairobi attack as ‘in retaliation for US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel
