18 killed as Somalia, US troops target Al Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali army forces, along with United States troops have killed at least 18 militants in a joint operation carried out in lower Shabelle region.

The operation was conducted in Sablale area of the region, leaving 18 militants dead, according to army’s radio quoting military sources.

The military sources said a senior commander identified as Mohamed Dhubow was among those killed the operation.

Somali armed group al Shabaab has not commented on the claims.

The group carried out similar attacks for the last couple of months in the capital, Mogadishu.

The al Qaeda linked group was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia.

The rebel group also lost most of their strongholds, but it still controls large rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia.

The al Qaeda linked group has been fighting over ten years to overthrow the internationally-backed government in Somalia
