MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Danab Special Forces, working with Jubaland State security forces, killed 14 al-Shabab militants in an operation in areas around Jamaame town in the Lower Juba region, the defense ministry said.

The operation also left one other militant injured, while the remaining fighters reportedly fled the area. Local residents said heavy fighting erupted after the troops were ambushed.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating terrorism and maintaining national security. There was no immediate comment from al-Shabab on the operation.

Jamaame has seen a surge in military operations in recent months. In a previous raid, 13 people were killed after mortar rounds fired by military forces struck the town, affecting 18 villages.
