The Kenyan military Thursday said it had killed at least 57 al-Shabaab militants in Lower jubba region South Somalia after fierce fighting between Somali national army backed by Kenyan defense forces.
The fighting took place at Hagan and Afmadow towns and began after al-Shabaab ambushed military convoy in that area residents confirmed to Mareeg Media.
Source also said that US special forces were taking part that fighting.
The raid on the militants under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) happened 31 kilometers northwest of the Afmadow area in Somalia close to the Subow center according to Kenyan defense forces statement.
Artillery shells rained on the unsuspecting militants with tsupport from helicopter gunships, leaving many injured, it said.
“In the onslaught 57 members of the al-Shabaab militia were killed and an unknown number injured, and 5 technicals were destroyed among other weapons,” the defense force said.
The Kenyan military said it was pursuing fleeing militants who were injured during the attack . AMISOM vowed to stabilize the war-torn Horn of Africa country.
Islamist group based in Somalia of al-Shabaab did not cooment yet.
