Mogadishu, 24 May 2014 – The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia (SRSG), Nicholas Kay, condemned the attack on the Federal Parliament today that resulted in fatalities and injuries.
A suspected suicide car bomb exploded at the main entrance and gunshots were fired at the building earlier today.
“I am appalled and condemn the attack on Somalia’s Federal Parliament. The Federal Parliament represents the people of Somalia and their hopes and aspirations for a peaceful and stable future.
Today’s attack is an attack against the people of Somalia for which there can be no justification. I commend the prompt action by the Somalia National Security Forces and AMISOM in responding to the incident.
The United Nations will continue to support the Somali people and their Government as they work towards peace and stability.”
Mr Kay spoke to the Prime Minister, Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed to express his solidarity and sincere condolences to the families and friends of all those who suffered in today’s attack and wished a swift recovery for those injured.
