Somalia:Rising food and fuel prices hit Somali markets The fuel price hike of
late comes amid rising food prices which have continued to climb in Mogadishu’s
markets.
Among the hardest hit by this economic-downturn are the tens of thousands of
underprivileged people who have been scraping for a living in the war-torn
capital Mogadishu.
Also, car-fare prices have continued to jump as fuel prices sky-rocket.
The van fees in Mogadishu is now tabbed at upwards of five thousand Somali
shillings, more than doubling from a price of two thousand Somali shillings
earlier in the month.
Furthermore, the number of the personal and transport vehicles in Mogadishu
have substantially decreased and this phenomenon is particularly evident
throughout various bus stations around the capital.
As food prices continue to rise, humanitarian food relief groups including
the World Food Programme are feeling the squeeze. |
